Local company aims high in RFID industryby The Star, published on 23th September 2009 You can download this article here (PDF) or view in JPG BUKIT JALIL: A Malaysian company hopes to become a world leader in radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology in the near future.
Multimedia Display Technologies Sdn Bhd (MDT) has been in the business since 2000 and has made several award-winning breakthroughs in the technology, said chairman and CEO Liew Choon Lian.
“RFID is a most reliable and secure technology, and has huge potential for mass implementation in fields such as retail, telecommunications and security,” he said. “Our products are not only smaller and more effective than those of our nearest competitor, they are also far cheaper and require considerably less power to operate.” MDT specialises in mini RFID reader chips such as the UMR 300. This is a USB-based reader that is designed for use in the retail industry to scan items that have been fitted with RFID receivers which the company also produces.
“The chip we designed is about half the size of a 10sen coin and is assembled into a reader that is no bigger than a thumbdrive,” he said. “A supermarket, for example, merely has to insert the device into a USB drive on a desktop or laptop for it to be operational. This eliminates the need for the large countertop or handheld readers that are in use today.” Liew said this type of technology has not been embraced on a global industrial scale due to the high cost of equipment and implementation. A big part of MDT’s strategy is to make both the readers and receivers more affordable. What’s the secret? “Our solutions are up to 15 times cheaper than similar products out there,” Liew said. “The secret lies in our unique chip design and we have filed for patents in several countries, including China and Japan. “No other company in the world has been able to replicate this and we are confident that we can be a pioneer player in this industry.” MDT supplies its RFID products to the Ministry of Defence for vehicle inventory management and is negotiating a deal with a leading mobile phone manufacturer to install its RFID device in the cellphones for authentication purposes. The company has won multiple awards for its products, including several Apicta awards in 2007 and a Red Herring Top 100 Global Company Award this year. Multimedia Development Corporation, the caretaker of the MSC Malaysia initiative, gives out the Apicta awards to companies and individuals that have made outstanding achievements in the ICT (information and communications technology) industry. The Apicta 2009 awards will be held next month. The Red Herring Top 100 Global Company Awards are conferred by US-based technology magazine Red Herring to innovative entrepreneurs in the field.
